A Notary Public is a Commissioner of Oaths appointed by the provincial government. A Notary’s primary function is to witness signatures on documents and administer oaths or affirmations.
Notarization of documents usually requires the physical presence of the person signing the document (the “signer”). The signer must be identified to the Public Notary by the presentation of current, government-issued photo identification such as a driver’s license or passport. The signer must also understand the contents of the document being notarized.
The Notary will then affix their signature and official seal to the document as proof that the signature is genuine and that the signer freely and willingly executed the document.
While not all documents require notarization, having certain documents notarized can save time and money down the road by avoiding potential challenges to the document’s validity.
